IAPS 2011  -  June 2-5  -  See website for International Association of Pastel Societies Conference.

Held again this year in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Sign up for demonstrations and classes.  Some of the world’s most famous and talented pastel artists, wonderful fellowship between artists from all over the world.  Do not miss it.  I will report afterward with pictures, as I did in 2009.  Hope to see you there.

2009 – I have just returned from the International Association of Pastel Societies Conference 2009 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This association is made up of pastel societies all over the world, and was founded in 1994, by Urania Christy Tarbet, who has just stepped down as its President. Taking over the gavel will be Maggie Price, well-known as one of the founders and first editor of The Pastel Journal. Maggie is also acclaimed as an artist, teacher, workshop instructor, and author. If you are a pastel artist, you might want to go on the IAPS website,   to see the names of the instructors who offered demonstrations, lectures, and workshops to the 600 pastelist participants at this conference. You will find many highly respected artists/teachers listed there, demonstrating their own special styles in pastel.  Mark your calendars for the next IAPS conference in Albuquerque the first week of June in 2011. MY NEW ART LOVE

I have recently discovered a wonderful invention  by a California colored pencil artist, Ester Roi.  Her invention is a heated board for softening or melting colored pencil, oil pastel, and wax crayons.  Using this technique, which I recently watched her demonstrate, you can move  the paint around by blending on the heated side of the board.  There is a cool side next to it, on which you can work at layering your drawing before heating and blending.  The board is called ‘Icarus’, named for the angel  who had wax wings and got too close to the sun.

You can see four of my  paintings using this method on my painting website, Archives.  For information on the technique or on purchasing the Icarus, go to www.icarus.com.  You will love Ester Roi’s work.  She has won many awards for her art using this technique.  Look up her art website too. www. esteroi.com

Bob Rohm, Oils and Pastels, 2010

I recently attended a workshop with Bob Rohm, Texas artist and teacher.  You should check out his website to see his outstanding paintings.  You will be so glad you did.  If you are an oil or pastel artist, you might consider taking part in one of his excellent workshops.  You will not find a better or more organized teacher anywhere. www. bobrohm.com

Richard McKinley, Oils and Pastels, 2011

Richard McKinley recently completed an oil and pastel workshop for us in Springfield, Illinois. sponsored by the Prairie Art Alliance.  It was outstanding.  Everyone benefited from his excellent teaching. and loved his stories and wit.  He could easily be a comedian, but we are all glad that he has carried the torch for us in pastel.  A more thorough or popular instructor cannot be found.  He has promised to return to us in 3 or 4 years, since he is booked up almost 3 years ahead.  Watch this blog for information when we set the date.  It is always first come, first serve, and his classes are always filled.  In the meantime you might check the website of Gateway Pastel Society in St. Louis, he will be teaching there in October 2011.  He will be appearing at IAPS again this year in Albuquerque, see blog.  You can enjoy his own work at his website www.richardmckinley.com ______________________________________
