Recently, Hazen and I visited the pottery studios and galleries in Seagrove, N.C. It is one of the largest collections of studio potters in a single area in the U.S………..and what a group of diversified and interesting artists. In two days, we visited about 20 potteries. A charming Bed and Breakfast, the Seagrove Stoneware Bed and Breakfast was our home away from home. The innkeepers are a pottery couple, David Fernandez and Alexa Modderno, who sell their work in a gallery right next to the inn, and the pottery workshop is on the other side. The Inn is located right in the center of the town of Seagrove. Check them out at www.seagrovestoneware.com.
Of particular interest to me were the crystalline glaze potters. PHIL MORGAN, a well-known crystalline potter who did early work in the technique, showed and discussed his work…….great pots with many post-fire reduction glazes. DOVER POTTERY, run by the McCanless family and the separate gallery of WILL McCANLESS, their son, had beautiful crystalline pieces. BULLDOG POTTERY is anotherplace to visit for unique crystalline glazes. One of the finest pottery studios was that of BEN OWEN. He has a large wood fired kiln and produces spectacular ceramics. These are only a few of the many outstanding ceramic artists in this area. They were all interested in seeing pictures of my work and discussing glazes and technique with me.
So if you want to take a vacation in a beautiful spot, and see old-time pottery in a rural location or modern pottery by MFA graduates and families who have passed down their talents, spend several days in Seagrove, N.C. You will come away inspired and probably toting a new collection of ceramics.
Before you go, write for a booklet on Seagrove from the Heart of North Carolina Visitors Bureau, 222 Sunset Avenue, Ste 107, Ashboro, N.C. 27203. To see pictures taken at Seagrove, click on the photo below.
